Cycling the Vuelta 2020 yourself!

On Friday, August 14, 2020, the Vuelta a España will start in our beautiful Utrecht, ending 23 days later and 3,500 kilometers further in sun-drenched Madrid. We will cycle all stages and every kilometer one day before!
We cannot say much about the details of the route, except that the first 3 stages will take place in the Netherlands. After that comes a rest day and we will continue in Spain. The details will only be announced in December or January, but we are there in any case!

The Vuelta 2020 in the Netherlands. We welcome the Spaniards with open arms. How different this was over 400 years ago. Our forefathers fought no less than 80 years at the time to free us from those meddling Spaniards. How beautiful that we live in this time and may greet each other with sportiness and friendship as old acquaintances?

This nod to the past shows once again how unique it is for the Netherlands to receive the Vuelta start. Unique for Utrecht, the first city ever to have received all three major Tours. Unique for Brabant, where the Spanish / Dutch history is still tangible. And unique for us, because we are going to cycle the Vuelta one day before the pros for the first time!

On Friday, August 14, 2020, the Vuelta a España will start with the Gran Salida in Utrecht, ending 23 days later (Sunday, September 6) and some 3,500 kilometers further in Madrid. We ourselves will follow exactly the same route!

We use our experiences in 3 previous Tour de Frances (2012, 2015 and 2019), also organized 1 day before, in which almost a hundred riders participated.

You can read about how Bart Kiemeney and Dominique Lehoucke worked for charity in 2019, in addition to all the kilometers, on their own websites. Here you can read their stories, experiences, beautiful moments, but also how they have suffered. Finally, a link to the blogs of Pieter Schreuder, who cycled the Tour de France with the Coureurs du Courage in 2016.

PRACTICAL INFORMATION:

Our objective is that everyone reaches Madrid. It is therefore not a competition and we will try to ride as much as possible in groups of the same level. Certainly in the ‘flat’ stages.
You certainly do not have to be a pro cyclist to participate, as our experience in previous Tours has proven. Age and gender also do not matter. It is important that you are a trained cyclist, have a good dose of perseverance and above all: enjoyment of cycling (of long distances)!

Accommodation is always in good (non-luxury) hotels. Some are also used by the pros the day after. Hereby we try to find quiet places, so that we can optimally work on recovery. Eating and drinking is geared to the enormous caloric need that comes with cycling a Grand Tour. Every day there will be a three-course menu or buffet, possibly supplemented so that there will never be a shortage. The same naturally also applies to breakfast, lunch and the alimentation en route.
Just like for the pros, there are (unfortunately) transfers. We do, however, try to make these as minimal as possible and therefore often opt for hotels in departure or arrival places.

The route is currently unknown, with the exception of the stages in the Netherlands. We expect the itinerary to be announced at the beginning of December and will then further explore this page as soon as possible with practical information regarding the route.
